| New residents of North Carolina have
60 days after establishing permanent residency to obtain their
driver’s license.
Applicants must pass a written exam and an eye exam. When you
are issued a North Carolina license, the driver’s license
from your prior state of residence must be surrendered to the
Driver License Examiner.

Vehicle Inspections
New residents must have their autos inspected within 10- days
of getting their registration. Inspections are required annually.
Vehicle Registration
Out-of-state vehicles must be registered at the expiration of
the time granted by reciprocity agreement between North Carolina
and your prior state of residence (usually 30s) or when gainful
employment is accepted, whichever occurs first.
To register your motor vehicle, you must furnish:
1. Title & valid insurance from the prior state of residence.
If a lien holder holds the title, you must provide lien holder’s
name & address.
2. Title fee and registration fee.
3. Proof of address
4. Proof of insurance.
5. Mileage on motor vehicle.
Registration must be renewed on an annual basis.
